Data Architecture Defined

Data architecture is a broad term that refers to the processes and methodologies that address data, more specifically rules, policies, standards and models. The role of data architecture is to help define the types of data collected, and how the data is used, managed, stored, and integrated within a database.

There are three basic models within data architecture:

  • The Business Data Model highlights data entities such as customers, products and transactions.
  • The System Model defines the data in as much detail as possible. 
  • The Technology Data Model details how the data is represented and stored. 

Data architecture is beneficial to organisations, as it translates business needs into data and system requirements. This is conducted through the facilitation of aligning information technology and business systems and the management of complex data and information delivery.
