Machine-To-Machine Defined

Machine-to-machine, also known as M2M, is a broad label  used to describe any technology that enables networked devices to exchange information and perform actions without the assistance of humans. Artificial intelligence and machine learning help facilitate the communication between systems, allowing the machines to make their own autonomous choices.

M2M technology involves machines and devices communicating information to between each other. Special applications translate the information shared into data which is relevant to the end user. The data is then analyzed and monitored according to those specifications. Certain data triggers automate actions required, allow the machines to communicate with each other (and with users) remotely.

Making a machine-to-machine communications system work is a step-by-step process. The main three elements in M2M process are:

  • sensors
  • a wireless network
  • a computer connected to the Internet.

The process of M2M sees engineers place sensors into strategic locations. These sensors send “live” data to a wireless network which is connected to the Internet. The engineers can monitor the whole process analyzing the incoming data with specialized software.

Some benefits of M2M include:

  • reduced costs by minimizing equipment maintenance
  • improved customer service by proactively monitoring and servicing equipment before it fails
