Bounce Rate Defined

A bounce rate is the percentage of site visits that are single-page sessions, meaning a visitor to a website leaves before viewing a second page. This metric can be thought of as, the rate of engagement a website has with a visitor.

It is calculated by the total number of one-page visits divided by the total number of visits to a website.

There is no definitive answer as to what is a high or low bounce rate, as this metric is dependant on the individual websites offering.

However, having a high bounce could be indicative of:

  • Having low quality pages that doesn’t increase engagement
  • The pages not being suited for the audiences being driven to the website
  • Visitors having found information they were looking for on the first page
