Cloud Compute Defined

Cloud compute or cloud computing is the delivery of computing services over the internet. It is the process of storing and accessing data and programs over the internet, rather than through a hard drive. Computing services include databases, networking, servers, analytics, and software.

There are three types of cloud computing deployment models:

  • Public Cloud – are owned and operated by companies that offer rapid access over a public network to affordable computing resources
  • Private Cloud – is infrastructure operated solely for a single organization, whether managed internally or by a third party, and hosted either internally or externally.
  • Hybrid Cloud – uses a private cloud foundation combined with the strategic integration and use of public cloud services

In addition to deployment types, cloud computing can be divided into three different categories:

  • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
  • Software as a Service (SaaS)
  • Platform as a Service (PaaS)

The benefits of cloud computing is that it means companies are not having to maintain their own computing infrastructure, instead resourcing it as a utility. Other benefits of cloud computing include; cost efficiency, choice, flexibility and elasticity, speed, integration, audit and compliance and business continuity planning.
