NewsCred

A high-growth technology company making data-driven product management decisions

Overview

Software as a service (SaaS) company NewsCred is at a critical stage in its growth story. In the last year, the company has more than doubled its team, raised $25M in Series C funding, and brought on industry leading clients like Monster, HP, SAP, The Hartford, and Pepsi.

Within this context, NewsCred’s Director of Product Strategy Benjy Boxer has overseen the development of a new software product that helps brands and agencies create high-volume content programs.

After launching and validating an initial product concept, Boxer and his team have reached a new milestone in which they’re continuously launching new features—a process that can often be challenging due to endless streams of request and feedback.

Goals

  • Data-driven product analytics to prioritize feature releases and new deployments
  • Prioritization system for product investments and feature releases
  • Process for measuring and visualizing impact of product decisions over the long-term
  • Mechanism to monitor product KPIs for specific customer accounts and segments

“Indicative keeps us moving ahead, faster. Every product manager on our team uses Indicative to monitor their KPIs. They’re measuring how their releases are going, identifying potential problems, and pinpointing areas of opportunity. We’re earlier to market with key features and ahead of potential problems before they have a chance to strike.”

Solution

Rather than relying on guesswork, NewsCred leverages Indicative’s visual dashboards and integrations with multiple data sources to eliminate data silos and prioritize product investments.

Continuous Measurement

NewCred’s product team does continuous deployment, meaning that they release updates in short, frequent cycles rather than in batches. Changes to KPIs, as a result, are less likely to be sudden and more likely to occur gradually—making them more challenging to monitor over time.

Indicative helps Boxer’s team prioritize data-driven decisions as part of their everyday routines. At any given time, each of NewsCred’s 6 product managers are monitoring their own sets of metrics.

Indicative facilitates data exploration, optimization, and user behavior analysis.

“Because we continuously deploy, there isn’t going to be that ‘eureka’ moment,” says Boxer. “We need to track performance over the course of several months to a year.”

Customer-Driven Product Releases

Catering to an enterprise market, Boxer and his team need to understand the impact of product decisions on an account level. Indicative facilitates this perspective by ingesting business intelligence data from multiple systems including Salesforce and internal product feeds. Account managers, customer success teams, and product managers can access customer and segment specific information, in real-time.

“We recently released a change to one of our most important features—a text editor—that automatically saved changes,” says Boxer “We used Indicative to measure the outcome of this change, looking at how many customers we saved from losing their content.”

Improved Performance Tracking

At NewsCred, data is part of the planning process for every feature release and product update. Boxer and his team use Indicative to refine their forecasts and track results by bringing new, quantitative perspectives to every discussion.

“We use Indicative in order to track how our customers are using different parts of our systems, to ensure that we’re investing in the right places and building the right tools for them to be successful,” says Boxer. “We also use this data to identify and respond to potential problems based on particular customer actions—for instance, if there have been gradual or sudden decreases in activity levels.”

Thanks to Indicative, NewsCred’s product team is able to respond to customer needs faster and pre-empt potential problems before they have a chance to occur.
