Personally Identifiable Information Defined

Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is any data that could potentially be used to identify a particular person. PII can also be used for de-anonymizing anonymous data.

There are two types of PII; sensitive and non-sensitive data.

  • Sensitive PII is information which, when disclosed, could result in harm to an individual whose privacy has been breached. Sensitive PII includes bank accounts, medical history, passport information, or drivers licence.
  • Non Sensitive PII is information that can be transmitted in an unencrypted form without resulting in harm to the individual. Non sensitive PII can easily be collected from websites, social media, public records, and articles.
