Modelling and Simulation Defined

Modelling and simulation (M&S) is the use of models as a basis for simulations, to develop data  for decision making purposes. These models could include mathematical, physical, or logical representations of a system, entity, or process.

Computer modelling and simulation can assist in the creation, design, and evaluation of complex systems, by modelling a real or proposed system using computer software. M&S works by building a mathematical model containing key parameters of a physical model. The simulation of the model then outputs the results in a format that can be implemented either by a human or machine.

The benefits of M&S include:

  • Gaining greater understanding of a processes
  • Identifying problem areas in processes
  • Evaluating the effect of systems such as demand, resources, supply, and constraints
  • Evaluating the impact of changes in policy prior to implementation

In Data Defined, we help make the complex world of data more accessible by explaining some of the most complex aspects of the field.
